A Surprise Every Time
Audiences are usually in for some kind of surprise when Lucas and Arthur Jussen take to the stage. After their celebrated debut hosted by Heinersdorff in March 2024, the brothers are returning to Dusseldorf in May 2026 with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields to play what appears to be a disconcertingly unspectacular programme of Beethoven, Mozart and Bach. However, as we all know, whenever the Jussens are involved, things are seldom as innocent as they seem. At the Tonhalle, they will be performing two masterpieces with such unusual instrumentation that they are very rarely played. Mozart’s Concerto in F requires a total of three (!) pianos and was famously recorded by Germany’s former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt in 1975. Lucas and Arthur will follow up with Bach’s concerto in C for two pianos and a string quartet. According to the first biographer of Bach, the two pianos sound surprisingly ‘splendid’ without a full orchestra. Come and decide for yourself while you marvel at the musical genius of these two outstanding pianists!
